A Whangamatā road is being closed after a sink hole appeared this morning.

The affected area is described as a "small section" of Papanui Road, according to a post on the Thames-Coromandel District Council Facebook page.

"Residents can still access their properties," the post says.

"The affected area opposite 213 Papanui has been marked with cones and the road closed between the intersections with Ruru Street and Gillian Street."

"Investigations are taking place to determine the repairs needed.

"It is expected to remain closed until Tuesday, January 17."
