Landslides, flooding, damaged roads and derailed trains is just some of the news Western Bay of Plenty residents are waking up to.

A thunderstorm watch has been lifted for the Tauranga region, but a heavy rain warning remains in force.

SH29 is closed between Tauranga and Te Poi due to multiple slips. No detours are available. SH30 is also closed.

SH25A in the Coromandel has also collapsed.

Tauranga City Council building inspectors are surveying the damage from a landslide that took out two homes at midnight in Maungatapu.

Overnight last night and into Sunday morning a slow moving band of heavy rain and thunderstorms has been affecting the Coromandel Peninsula and Kaimai Range, and as of 7am Sunday was lying inland around Tauranga, says WeatherWatch.co.nz

"More instability today and Monday will likely result in more areas of thunderstorms (which can produce locally heavier rain - and go beyond what is forecast in rainfall)."

People have been out and about this morning surveying the damage left in the wake of the recent heavy rain.
