A magnitude 4.8 earthquake near Te Aroha shook the central North Island overnight.
Geonet reports the quake at 2.02am was centred 5km south of Te Aroha and was 6km deep.
The early morning shake was followed by aftershocks with the largest a 2.5-magnitude quake at 3.08am.
More than 11,000 people reported feeling the jolt quake particularly in Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Auckland.
"Big rolling shake I thought I was falling off the bed and all my perfume bottles were shaking on my dresser! Went on for some time too," says one SunLive reader.

...at my place; about 5 seconds of the house shaking. Nothing fell down and it was similar to a big truck passing. I can understand religious and superstitious people believing that the end is near; we have exceptional climate and much more frequent earthquakes than has been the case. Nevertheless, I believe this is part of the natural cycle for our planet. Since the dawn of time, Humans have turned to the Gods, when events outside their control have frightened them. There are only 2 possible outcomes; we survive or we don't.

i think a lot of these p eople who say they felt it, was in their imagination or a truck going past
