AIMS Games diary: Day Three

Watch SunLive's video diary interview with Vicki Semple for the results of Day Three of the NZCT AIMS Games. During the NZCT AIMS, SunLive will show a daily diary entry to keep you up to date with the event progress.

It's been another successful day at the intermediate aged AIMS Games taking place in sporting venues throughout Tauranga this week.

The first major day of action at the NZCT AIMS Games on Monday saw a series of AIMS records fall – including nine in the swimming hearts at Baywave.

AIMS spokesperson Melanie Short says the week-long intermediate school sports tournament had got off to a great start with great performances on and off the sports field.

'Everyone's very excited. There have been lots of smiling faces and everyone has been having fun and playing hard.”

AIMS football coordinator Peter Smith was pleased with the first day of the competition, which saw over 900 young footballers taking to the field at Blake Park in the nine-player team format.

'The biggest worry was the high hinds playing havoc with the school's gazebos – several have been seen airborne heading towards the netball courts”

Along with football and netball, Blake Park was also abuzz with hockey, tennis, squash and badminton.

Badminton Coachforce officer Delwyn Cooper was excited with the standard of the 89 boys' singles games, while today the boys' pairs take place.

Meanwhile the tournament's latest code rugby league kicks off today at Grenada Park in Arataki.

Tournament director Vicki Semple says it was great to see nine AIMS records broken in the swimming and is hoping a national record will be broken with the strong competition on Tuesday.

Tauranga Boys' College students hit Blake Park to capture some of the AIMS Games action.

Day One Results

The NZCT AIMS Games got off to a great start with its first event on Sunday with a new record set in the cross country, by Tahatai Coast School division one boys runner Samuel Tanner who shaved 11 seconds off the previous record to finish in 10 minutes 35 seconds.

Following in his father's footsteps was Theodore Quax from Farm Cove Intermediate School, who finished in second place in the division two boys race on 10.12, just behind winner Bradley Christison of Tutira School also on 10.12.

Theo's father Dick Quax, a silver medallist at the 1976 Montreal Olympic GAMES, describes the AIMS Games as a 'great opportunity for young sportsmen and sportswomen to meet other young people in an atmosphere of friendly rivalry”.

Tauranga Intermediate School won the school championship 12km relay.
