AIMS Games diary: Day Four

The third day of the intermediate school AIMS Games has seen more amazing action from sporting venues around Tauranga.

On the football field Football CoachForce Officer Peter Smith says the crowds are waiting with anticipation with the boys draw of John Paul College, Rotorua facing Auckland's Balmoral Intermediate, both teams unbeaten after four games.

In the boys draw, five out of the 40 teams remain unbeaten after four games; Balmoral, John Paul College, Glen Eden, St Peter's Cambridge and Whakatane, with Balmoral yet to concede a goal having scored 25 in total.

In the girls draw, four Schools are setting the pace; Blockhouse Bay, St Cuthberts, Palmerston North and Peachgrove.

Karen Hampton, Sports Coordinator at Tauranga Intermediate, says it was another blustery day of competition.

The wind hasn't been a problem for indoor bowls, that this year has 172 Year 7 and 8 students from 20 schools entered into the singles event, up from 86 entries in 2011.

Josh Tamang from Pongakawa School took out the Gold Medal at the finals of the Indoor Bowls Singles competition.

He bet Nicholas Thomson from Matamata Intermediate in a very tense final who took out the silver medal.

In the play off for bronze, Vincent Goodman from Pongakawa School beat Raven Leach from Illminister Intermediate on a deciding end after winning one set each.

In the golf 57 young golfers from as far afield as Northland to Christchurch are taking part in the tournament. The conditions underfoot were quite heavy, with soft ground and long rough, but this didn't stop some really top scoring.

Tuesday was day one for the rugby league at Arataki Park while the basketball entered day two at the TECT Arena at Baypark.

Hastings Intermediate beat teams by an average of 60 points while Kiatoa girls' team took it a step further beating teams by close to 100 points each.

Tonight there is a social evening and disco at the Tauranga Intermediate hall from 7pm.
