Tauranga City Council has begun work on a new 'transformational project” for the city.
Work is underway on the lookout from Tunks Reserve at the top of Elizabeth Street East.
A council spokesperson says this is to make 'this an even better place for looking out over Te Awanui Tauranga Harbour with spaces to enjoy the view in the shade or sun”.
'Access between Elizabeth Street and The Strand Extension is also being improved, with a new walkway that will feature a cycle runnel (a guide alongside a stairway so people can wheel their bikes up and down without having to lift and carry them) to make sure pedestrians and cyclists can use it safely.
'While we get this work done, we will have to close the current stairs temporarily through to December.
'In time, people will be able to go between the top of Elizabeth Street, through the recently installed rail underpass and link with a new boardwalk into the city centre.
'We will also be upgrading the streetscape to complement the work currently underway on Elizabeth Street, creating an attractive and safer environment for the community.”

They should put in eco-friendly open air urinals as we see in Europe for the homeless and drunkards to use.
A pretty little point.

You can't object to something as small and simple as this, and the end result will be a benefit. It makes me think that Council should confine itself to small enhancements like this and then seek public prioritization on the bigger stuff...
