Shelter belt on fire on Matakana Island

Update, 5.58pm: A shelter belt fire on Matakana Island has now been extinguished by Fire and Emergency NZ services.

“The fire is extinguished but they’re going to remain on site to check for any hot spots and make sure the fire is contained,” Northern Fire Communications shift manager Karen Larking said.

One fire truck was reported to be at the scene of the shelter belt fire.

Earlier, 5.40pm: Fire and Emergency NZ services are attending a vegetation fire on Matakana Island, in the western Bay of Plenty.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Karen Larking said a shelter belt is on fire.

“A fire truck has only been there 10 minutes, and we are expecting an update soon,” Larking said.

The fire service was notified of the fire at 4.47pm.
