Tauranga City Council reports the majority of construction outside Academy Motor Inn at the 15th Ave intersection is now complete.
Work will shift across the road to the State Highway 2 (south-west) corner in the coming days.
"These complex upgrades involve a new signalised intersection, stormwater upgrades, new kerb and channel, and upgrades to the underground electrical connections and traffic lights," says a statement from the city council.
"The teams will be returning to all corners of this intersection when it is time to remove the old traffic light connections and connect the new traffic lights."
Work on the stormwater upgrade at the 9th Ave intersection will also start in the coming weeks, before the upgrade of the intersection itself, which will include installing the remaining traffic lights and removing the roundabout before upgrading the road for the new intersection.
Road resurfacing work will also follow throughout the rest of the Cameron Road upgrade.
Council says construction is continuing at the major intersections at 15th Ave and Elizabeth Street, and the smaller intersections at: 3rd Ave (west), 7th Avee (west), 10th Ave (west) and 16th Ave (east).
"There are also some weekend works and road closures coming up between 13th Ave and 16th Ave."
You can find more information on these closures on the road closures webpage.
Intersection work:
- Cameron Road/ Elizabeth Street (north-east corner, outside Pacific Toyota): there is a southbound left lane closure which extends left around the corner into Elizabeth Street (east).
- Elizabeth Street (east)/ Cameron Road (south-east corner, outside St Mary Immaculate church): there is a left lane closure for traffic turning left from Elizabeth Street on to Cameron Road.
- 1st Ave (west): will become entry-only for six weeks from Sunday, June 11.
- 2nd Ave (west): is entry only, and the centre lanes of Cameron Road passing Second Avenue are closed.
- 3rd Ave (west): is exit only.
- 5th Ave (east): is entry only.
- 5th Ave (west): is entry only.
- 7th Ave (west): is now closed permanently to traffic as it becomes a green space cul-de-sac.
- 10th Ave intersection (west): is closed.
- 15th Ave intersection (east): the left lane that turns left from Cameron Road into State Highway 2 is closed. Traffic can still access SH2 from Cameron Road by using the centre lane.
- 16th Ave/Cameron Road (east): is closed. Access to Sixteenth Avenue (east) remains via Devonport Road.
- 16th Ave (west): is exit only.
"We ask that you to take these works into account when you plan your journey and prepare for lane closures and potential delays.
"You can check here for travel updates.
"We also recommend checking Google Maps or Waka Kotahi NZTA Journey Planner."

Lately I have travelled Cameron Rd on a reasonably regular basis and although it's certainly nothing unusual to see a group of "workers" watching someone else working, I have been astonished by the numbers of "workers" standing around watching a machine working or a, younger crew member pushing a broom or watching the traffic go by. And then they all sit down for lunch or a break. Amazing that they've got so far really.
Completion Dates Please

watch the 9th Ave (Pak n Save) intersection turn into a disaster area when the lights go on,just like Chadwick Rd was, when there was never a problem before. Just like when the Brookfield roundabout was rebuilt, and worked great... until they turned the lights on, so that EVERYONE gets held up for 5 minutes. totally clueless streets engineering.
15th Ave

Once the works is completed, will the left lane from 15th Ave turning left heading to the hospital on Cameron Rd, will be reinstated? It's looking like there will only be 1 lane for all traffic going straight through and left????
