Gymnasts from local gymnastics club Impact Gymsport Academy won't have far to travel for this year's national competition next month.

The New Zealand Gymnastics Championships will be held July 5-8 at Mercury BayPark Arena - right next door to their club.

Over 900 athletes will vie for podium positions across trampoline, tumble, artistic, rhythmic and aerobic gymnastics.

Impact's gymnasts make up a big portion of the Bay of Plenty women's artistic team, which includes gymnasts from Argos Gymnastics in Tauranga, Mid Island Gym Sports (MIGS) in Rotorua, and Te Puke Gymsport.

The girls are looking forward to showcasing their hours of training across the four apparatus: floor, vault, beam and uneven bars.

Impact coach Ebony Matenga has been named head coach for the Bay or Plenty Women's Artistic Gymnastics team.

'You can only hope that on the day they compete as well as they train. They put in so much hard work over the year with the goal of qualifying for Nationals, I just hope that is reflected on the day,” says Ebony.

Ebony is eager to see more young women participate in gymnastics, including those from families who might struggle financially.

"Impact has been grateful for the support of its major sponsor, Barrett Homes and now the club is looking for more sponsors from the community to enable more young women to grasp this opportunity," says Impact manager Shar Matthews.

Shar anticipates a surge of interest in the sport with the excitement of Nationals being hosted in Tauranga this year.

'We need to have people in the community get behind our club so that we can bring this fantastic sport to as many people as possible.”
