Youth to appear in court following driver incident

A youth who has been taken into custody is due to appear in Tauranga Youth Court today charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and failing to stop for Police.

One person was taken into custody following a fleeing driver incident in the Bay of Plenty on Monday night.

"About 9.30pm, on June 12, Police sighted a stolen vehicle on Pyes Pa Road, Tauranga," says a police spokesperson.

Police signalled the vehicle to stop, however it failed to do so.

"A brief pursuit was initiated, however, it was abandoned shortly after and instead road spikes were deployed."

The vehicle then came to a stop on State Highway 2, Pikowai.

SunLive readers reported observing the pursuit.

"A car chase along State Highway 2 (circa Rodgers Road area) around 10pm last night [Monday]. Appeared to [be] a small car driving at a relatively low speed with maybe 10 police cars with lights and sirens travelling from Paengaroa to Matata direction."

A 15-year-old was taken into custody and charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and failing to stop for Police.

He is due to appear in Tauranga Youth Court today, Tuesday June 13.

"Enquiries into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing," says a police spokesperson.
