Two people are in custody following a theft incident in Tauranga on Sunday morning.
'Police were called to a store on Cameron Road, Tauranga at about 5.45am after two people entered the store and stole food,” says a police spokesperson.
'Police attended and took the two people into custody.”
The owners of 16th Ave Cafe on Cameron Road say they were opening their café when the incident happened.
'We were both at work. Two drunk kids came in the front door as we were opening,” says the owner.
'They were unarmed and took some small savouries. It was just a little incident.”
A member of the public says he got there within minutes of it happening.
'The owners haven't owned the café that long. They've had to contend with the Cameron Road construction and need the community to support them.
'One of the regulars who was in there when it happened said one of the two offenders said to the owner ‘do you know who my father is?' He said the guy threw a beer bottle which broke leaving glass in the doorway.
'A guy on a mobility scooter showed the cops where they [the two offenders] were. The police got there pretty quick after it happened and caught them. The police said they'd just turned 18.”
Police say enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

If a drunk kid said to me: "Do you know who my father is?" I'd say: "No, but I bet he'll be thrilled and proud when he finds out what you've been doing." Most of the time, though, I am fervently grateful that I am NOT a cop. Given what they have to deal with, they deserve nothing less than our respect and support.

When he was asked "Do you know who my father is?' The owner of the cafe ought to have replied, "You could always ask your mother"

In a lot of cases the parents don't actually care.

It certainly seems like they don't care, but I suspect that many of them just don't know what to do about their kids running wild. Most parents have dreams for their children and want them to succeed as people and in life. But we are creating a culture where concepts like respect, duty, discipline, and responsibility are considered to be outmoded and unnecessary. Integrity and honesty are not worth much any more and kids are exposed to life as lived on American TV (it isn't even REAL America...) as a better, more exciting, way to grow up. Programs in schools like Kiwi Can (Graeme Dingle) can do much to fix this but they need more support and expansion. I've seen these programs first hand and both teachers and kids really enjoy (and benefit from...) them. Nevertheless, the best place for teaching life values remains the home.
