Enquiries are ongoing following a driver fleeing the scene of a vehicle crash in Pyes Pa early on Sunday morning.

The vehicle left the road, smashing into the Pyes Pa Shopping Centre sign.

"A female driver heading to Tauranga failed to control the SUV at 2am," says a nearby resident.

"The vehicle smashed through a line of trees between the berm and buildings and came to rest against the main signage for the shopping centre."

"Police responded to a one vehicle crash where a car has hit a sign on Pyes Pa Road, near Althorp Avenue around 2.15am," says a police spokesperson.

"It appears no-one was injured.

"The occupants of the vehicle fled the scene."

Police say enquiries are ongoing.
