A heavy police presence is outside Tauranga District Court this morning ahead of gang members appearing after a disorder at Mount Maunganui yesterday.

Police say seven of the adults arrested are due to appear.

Ahead of the appearances, police say they "have a presence" at Tauranga District Court, to "ensure the safety of those in the vicinity of and using the court and to provide wider reassurance to the community".

Yesterday, eight people were taken into custody following a gang-related incident involving weapons on Maunganui Road.

"Police responded to reports of disorder on Maunganui Road near the roundabout with Golf Road and Hewlett's Road, around 9.30am, involving two different groups of gang members," a police spokesperson said at the time.

"Some of those involved were carrying weapons.

"Several people dispersed upon Police arrival."

"We encourage our communities to report any incidents of disorder immediately to 111.

"If you have any footage, witnessed the incident or have any information that may assist Police in our investigation, please contact Police on 105 or online at https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105, using Update My Report and reference file number 230621/6004.

"Alternatively, you can report information anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111."

Gang Violence

Luxon is right. New Zealand police need to crack down on gangs and gang violence, and hard. The courts need to play their part by issuing longer prison terms for offenders of violence . Seems to be alot of talk but little action. Winston Peters is also an advocate of tougher penalties. Labour is more into LGBT and supporting all soughts of gender identity than tackling the more pressing problems in the community
