As part of the State Highway 30 Tikitere to Whakatāne speed review, new safe speed limits have been set and installation of the new signs started Monday.
Due to the nearly 80km long corridor, the 200 new signs will be installed over two to three weeks, weather permitting.
As each sign is installed, the new speed comes into force for that section of highway.
"Working in stages is the safest way to install the signs," says a Waka Kotahi NZTA spokesperson.
"To cover each sign until they’re all installed would create a safety risk, as each sign needs to be handled three times. Not only does this triple the time people are working on the road and increase costs, but it also means the road is under slow traffic management for longer."
Installation has started and people will see the new speed limit signs first in Rotoiti and Rotomā, followed by Tikitere to Rotoehu, then Te Teko, Awakeri and Whakatāne.
Once the new speed limit signs are in place, the permanent new speed limits are:

Here's a novel idea.
Instead of wasting money on signs, just fix the roads.
the coasts offset by replacing signs could go a long way towards straightening/widening/fixing/re-routing our roads.
Pretty sure those who have lost loved ones of our roads would be happier to actual safe roads... not signs that will be ignored.
The real issue........

....surely has to be recognising, accepting and working towards fixing the issue of poor driver skills/inattention or alcohol/drug use....this is a way larger issue for anyone to take the 'easy' way out of as NZTA blindly believe.
The acceptance of making mistakes is now commonplace and a return for personal responsibility should be promoted.....no more excuses.....
Whatever the speed is set at, drivers will still run off the road and other crazy unexplained things, but just a little slower !!
200!!

200 signs? Isn't that a bit over the top?
