UPDATE 8.41PM: One person has been taken to hospital in serious condition followin a crash near Maungatapu.

A police spokesperson says emergency services were called about 7pm to SH29a, Maungatapu, after a two-vehicle crash.

"One person has gone through to hospital in a serious condition.

"It appears a tow has been called.

"The road has been blocked and traffic management remains in place."

EARLIER:

State Highway 29A near Maungatapu is closed.

Emergency services are at the scene of a serious crash.

A Tauranga City Council spokesperson says there is a crash on SH29a Maungatapu between the Taipari Overbridge and the Maungatapu roundabout.

"The road is closed.

"Emergency services are onsite and diversions are in place. Please avoid the area and drive with care."
