Tauranga City Council's Marty Grenfell remain as cheif executive of the organisation for another five years.

Commission chair Anne Tolley announced the reappointment on Monday.

“In June, the Commission decided to advertise the Chief Executive role, rather than extend the encumbent’s contract by two years, as provided for by legislation. That reflected our desire to provide greater certainty and continuity of executive leadership for the organisation, the community and next year’s incoming elected council.

“That will mean that the new council will not have to start an appointment process within nine months of being elected, ensuring that they have the time required to come to grips with their governance role and the council’s significant work programme.”

Anne says the Commission undertook a full employment process and while the calibre of the applicants was impressive, it did serve to: “highlight Mr. Grenfell’s strengths and the outstanding contribution he has made to the organisation and community”.

“Council’s executive team and staff can now focus their efforts on our existing and forthcoming long-term plans and delivering the unprecedented level of investment required to ensure our city remains a great place to live, work, learn and play.”

Hmmm

I wonder... Was it a totally independent selection process and was it solely focused on finding the best possible person, or were there lunchtime meetings and handshakes involved. Of course not, it is internationally recognised that NZ is one of the least corrupt countries in the world and there couldn't possibly be any corrupt practices in NZ politics... Could there?

Democracy ?

Marty Grenfell May be doing a great job and possibly would have been reappointed by a democratically elected council. This process to ensure elected councillors don't have any input in the decision flys in the face of democracy.

A top quality micro manager. Unfortunately these managers of the past have no place in todays leadership roles.

That’s a worry…

Marty has been conspicuously missing from comment on council projects. His staff have become arrogant and unhelpful. They seem to have no sympathy for our struggling businesses and are quick to quote the public works act when criticised. This attitude comes from the top and he is at the top of council employees. He appears to have no views on the cost, design and construction methods of the contractors who are dragging the chain on most of our major projects. He has obviously been gagged by the commission. If not he needs to relook at the reasons for having a CEO.

As if by magic

Another slight of magic from unelected officials on behalf of another unelected official. This wee trick is just business as normal.
