UPDATE 11.45am: Traffic congestion is beginning to clear on Hewletts Road after a truck blocked the road during a protest this morning.
A SunLive journalist at the scene says traffic is now flowing in the area.
A Waka Kotahi spokesperson says to continue to expect delays while traffic clears due to a public event.
Significant traffic congestion is being reported on Hewletts Road in Mount Maunganui.
Tauranga City Council says there is a truck blocking the Totara Street entrance of Hewletts Road, outside BP.
"This is causing significant congestion on Hewletts Road back towards the Harbour Bridge."
People are being advised to avoid the area or expect major delays.
A reporter at the scene says there is a protest taking place in the area.

Imagine if we all took a stand by doing something that impacted upon every other person, unrelated to the matter, who were trying to go about their lives. Who were the protesters trying to affect and influence?
Just another mob of jobless sponges not caring about who they upset because all they have is time on their hands paid for by the very people they are annoying.

While air quality and the environment is a valid cause there are other ways to go about it than disrupting everyone else’s day. The protesters would’ve gained more support if they’d targeted their action on a weekend or lunchtime and at an identifiable source like TCC or the regional council not innocent uninvolved motorists. That’s how you win support rather than alienating people.
