One gold medal is a great achievement for any team in any sport, but winning it twice in a row is a privilege just the best can have.

The Mustangs In-line Hockey Club is celebrating after winning their second gold medal at the New Zealand In-line Hockey Championships 2023.

"Considering the size and resources of our small club, these achievements are truly remarkable. Our players have demonstrated exceptional talent, dedication, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament," says Mount Mustangs In-line Hockey Club Inc. president Joel Coppins.

But this is not the only achievement for a club that struggles to find a proper facility for training and hosting their games.

While the masters' team clinched the gold medal for the second year in a row, the Senior A Team secured a commendable third place taking the bronze home.

"As much as we celebrate our success, we cannot ignore the limitations we face due to inadequate facilities here in Tauranga. It is important to note we are not only focused on our achievements. We also strive to contribute to the development of young players in the sport," says Joel.

The biggest dream for the team over the years has been to have an adequate infrastructure in Tauranga to train, and even better to host a tournament that brings more visitors to the city and allows all the local players to show their potential and improve their skills at a proper rink.

"A proper rink in Tauranga would not only benefit the Mustangs In-line Hockey Club but also provide a platform for other sporting codes that also fall short of adequate infrastructure here in Tauranga. It would promote physical activity, enhance community spirit, and create opportunities for local talent to thrive," says Joel.
