Tauranga reacts to waterfront car park closure

The future of the waterfront car park now closed, makes the business owners think this would be the loneliest summer in years. Photos: Juan Cortes/SunLive.

Today is Monday, October 30 and the waterfront car park in Tauranga CBD is closed. As part of the Plan to transform Tauranga City Centre, TCC has started the process of building a new Playground on the Waterfront of the city, but what are people thinking about this decision?

SunLive walks up and down asking people what they think about the plan to close the car park and make a green area and these were some of their answers.

“It is a good idea but is not the right timing,” says one person.

“The council and their magnificent Ideas, we have nothing to do, just wait,” says another.

“It does not bother me as long as we have another car park to replace the waterfront one.”

“I love to come to the waterfront to have a good lunch or walk with my kids, I will have to walk more to reach it but, I think it will be ok.”

Despite some people seemingly not affected by this decision, there is another reality on the other side of the coin.

That reality deeply affects all the business owners who, for years, have found the waterfront car park an ally to the success of their restaurants, cafes and bars.

This is how the upgrading of the Masonic car park is progressing.

“Most of the people who come to have lunch at Miss Gees leave their vehicles in that car park, now without a place to park, there will be no clients who come and visit our businesses. Despite the council having upgraded the Dive Cres car park, the clients won’t walk that long to eat,” says Miss Gee’s Bar and Eatery owner Ashleigh Gee.

According to Macau’s Owner Craig Cameron, the safety of the staff is one of his biggest concerns.

“I am not just thinking about what is best for my business, I am also thinking about the well-being of my staff.

“We have around 20 people working here and lots of them are ladies. So at the end of the night, there is no public transport and I don’t think is safe to walk from here to the new car park in Dive Cres.

“Besides, I think this measure did not take the elderly into consideration. Some of our clients come in wheelchairs or are accompanied by someone and this situation makes things more difficult for them.”

The Phoenix owner Ane-Marie Ward says she and her husband have suggested different options for a better approach to this process but they were never listened to by the council.

“We understand this decision was made for the best of our city but we feel the businesses owners' needs have not been listened and we are part of the city too, we don’t understand why the rush to start this work at the beginning the summer, the best time for people to come and enjoy Tauranga.

“Closing the car park will not just affect the customers, we will lose part of our valuable staff due to this situation.”

All The business owners along the waterfront agree that they are not against the renovation and improvement of the city, but the timing is not the right one for two specific reasons.

-The first one is the city is chaos:  All the unfinished road works in the CBD make people not want to come over because the traffic is chaotic and with no car parks near the restaurants the time of their brakes reduces to nothing, which results in zero clients.

-The second one is, why during the summer: After a long winter, all the business owners were waiting for the customers who will come during the hot season to visit the city, to increase their sales and keep their business alive. With the car park closed, and all the road works, no want will come to the CBD even during the hot days.

One last meeting will be held on October 6 between the council and Main Street Tauranga chairwoman and Miss Gee's Bar and Eatery owner Ashleigh, to see if there is a lifeguard for the businesses during the summer ahead or if the car park will remain closed and they are definitely on their own.

There is no "lifeguard", the CBD businesses are cast adrift permanently, it is a one way trip.

TCC has no interest in anything contrary to what they have already decided is wonderful... it is part of the big concept, the big plan and all wonderous things a-plenty of "We are listening".

What TCC have not told anyone, is "Who" are they listening to? The evidence would suggest that they are listening to the content of an echo-chamber?

Parking

I live 20 mins out of Tauranga and like to go to Tauranga for dinner every now and then. I also use a disabled parking card. If I can not find a park it will be another area I am excluded from like Cameron road. I do feel so sorry for the hard working businesses!

Businesses will get no reprieve or redress.

We already saw the Council's reaction to businesses devastated by the Cameron Road work. They could have easily given a "Rates Holiday" even for a few weeks while the interminable works are going on, but, NO, nothing... The ONLY thing they care about is generating revenue and there is no consideration for the community or businesses. Then they wonder why the public feel so disengaged from them. Everybody can see that right now is NOT the time (at the beginning of the Summer season which is a last lifeline for many of our businesses) to have the City streets in ruins and the access to it like a reconfigurable rat's maze that changes every few weeks (just as you begin to learn it). But they do it because they can. The Commissioners should resign and we should have an elected Council that has answerability to the community.

APART FROM.......

The MASSIVE crate of coffin nails you have just thrown at the nearly dead CBD, MY thoughts when I heard were "where will all the restaurant/bar workers park their cars?". Leaving a restaurant or bar at closing time, late evening, even the early hours of the morning, will these workers, MANY who are female, and having to walk a long distance, in the dark/semi-dark, deserted streets is a nightmare waiting to happen. Anne Tolley........got a daughter, grand-daughter, niece who YOU would like to have to 'walk that lonely walk'? Oh of course not, YOUR 'loved ones' wouldn't be having to do stuff like that eh. Hideous, heinous. If anyone is attacked, raped it will be on YOUR hands. NOT OK!!!!!

Council planning at its best

Let's see, what else can we do to kill the CBD, just 9 weeks out from Christmas. These guys are unbelievable. What should be the busiest time of the year for retail and restaurants and one barrier after another is thrown at them. Just goes to show how out of touch these Commissioners are.

parking building

Failure of the Harrington Street parking building ,is part of the plan would have covered the problem of parking for the Strand restaurants'. The building failure should have paused the waterfront upgrade .These restaurants' will be easily be able to present their case to TCC, when their customers numbers collapse or else they will go broke.
TCC and the Commissioners you are about to be tested!!!!

Now we will see the bars and restaurants closing as well. What is the Council going to do with all these empty shops, I ask? Looking forward to seeing these non-elected people ousted.

There is actually a solution

Make strand and a gray street one way and the angle park the entire length may even have enough room to do both sides in angle parking, with less lane its safer for safer for pedestrians.

These Commissioners have no idea when Christmas is. On the money they're getting every day is Christmas for them. They have lost all touch with reality in SO MANY ways.
