An intersection safety upgrade underway at the corner of Bellevue and Windsor Roads is expected to be completed in December, weather dependent.
The upgrade involves putting traffic calming measures in place to reduce speed at the corner and will make the road safer for everyone who uses it, especially people and children walking, says a Tauranga City Council spokesperson.
"The improvements include a raised pedestrian crossing on Bellevue Road to make crossing the road safer, two additional raised platforms to slow vehicles as they approach the corner, and a widened shared pathway to safely guide walkers and cyclists around the intersection.
"While the work is underway, a shoulder closure is in place with a 30 km/h speed limit for the safety of the workers onsite.
"When possible, two-way traffic will continue, although there will be occasional stop/go disruptions and road closures at night. Access to residents’ properties will not be restricted."
Council says the existing marked cycle lane will mostly remain available to cyclists, except when the surfaces are being relayed. Cyclists will need to hop off their bikes and walk on the footpath while this is happening.
"As we work on each stage, the footpath is closed on one side with pedestrians diverted to the opposite footpath using temporary crossing points.
"During construction, the two bus stops on Bellevue Road have been relocated towards Brookfield with a temporary bus sign marking their positions. When the work is complete, these bus stops will permanently be located at 163 and 172 Bellevue Road.
"Thank you for your patience while we undertake this important safety upgrade."

Problem. What Problem?

Yet again, another solution to a problem which never existed. I have used that intersection for the past 20 years and sure, some idiots have lost control on the corner, but generally it's an easy corner. I understand there COULD be justification for a pedestrian crossing, but why there? Surely it would make sense a little further up, closer to Seymour Place.
