Charred remains of forestry is what can be seen in a flyover video of the Matakana Island fireground.

Fire and Emergency crews captured a video today which shows the extent of fire damage on Matakana Island.

The blaze broke out on Saturday night and burnt through more than 37 hectares of scrub and pine slash.

It was contained on Sunday night but 30 firefighters and three helicopters have continued to work through the week to keep it under control with fire breaks.

On Tuesday, incident controller Jeff Maunder says in some areas the fire is burning underground in the roots of large trees.

In a post on Facebook today, Bay of Plenty - Fire and Emergncy says firefighters will remain at the fireground until the end of the week, working on reinforcing containment lines, removing hotspots, and extinguishing any flare ups.

"A huge thank you to our crews who have given up time with their loved ones over the Christmas holidays, and a special shout out to all their friends and families for keeping things going back home."
