There has been a power outage for nearly 16 hours to 66 properties at Tahawai since the crash on Lindemann Road at 11.02pm on Friday.

The power pole and wires came down when the car rolled onto its side when crashing into the pole.

"There are crews now attending, and the car has been pulled away from the downed pole," says local resident Andrew Bake at 3.15pm on Saturday.

"We talked to a crew member, and they said they are awaiting a HIAB which I believe to be a crane mounted on a truck. He also said they expect to have power back by tonight."

PowerCo say they made the site safe following the crash.

Following a request for an estimated restoration time from SunLive early Saturday afternoon, a PowerCo spokesperson replied that they don't "currently have an estimated restoration time".

"While the wires have been cleared from the road and the site made safe, the car needs to be removed before repairs can be carried out and unfortunately there wasn’t a tow truck available overnight.

"We’ll be carrying the repairs out as quickly as possible so the remaining 66 customers can be reconnected, and we’d like to thank customers for their patience."

PowerCo contractors arrived at the crash site around mid-afternoon, with a truck, vehicle and equipment.

Residents of Lindemann Road say that there are no power contractors working at the site on Saturday to fix the pole or restore power to the area.

“We are wondering when our power will be coming back on,” says resident Andrew Blake.

“This morning the power is still off with no one at the site fixing the power or the pole.  The pole is absolutely destroyed.”

Andrew says his family were having showers and heading to bed on Friday night when their power went out, but they didn’t know the outage was due to a vehicle crash until Saturday morning.

“We’re at the bottom of the road. We woke up this morning and Powerco had a report saying it was this road [Lindemann Road].

“We went for a drive and came across it, it’s been all cleaned up. The wires have been coiled.”

They found a purple Nissan hatchback lying on its side against the pole, with contents including clothing and a box of beer strewn amongst the debris from the car.

Andrew says the vehicle was travelling down the road, which has a slight curve, and has a 45 km per hour speed limit.

“We have cameras watching the road, and saw police, fire and ambulance go up there. They were there quick, ambulance were there within three minutes of the car crashing, and fire and police were there just five minutes after the ambulance. They all left by midnight."

On Saturday afternoon, the power pole is still lying leaning over, with wires running along the roadside on the grass, and the vehicle still on its side.

Andrew says they contacted their power company on Saturday morning  and were told it was being managed by Powerco, but found that they couldn’t get in touch with anyone at PowerCo.

Is no powerline/lamp post safe in NZ? How are these people allowed back on the road? Just another 'accident', are there no consequences for these drivers?

Ah who're we to say there's no responsibility, perhaps the driver is just a lifelong rural lifestyle-liver, being aware of rustlers and the like just taking 'i-count-a-bull-ity' of the nearby paddock when they missed the road. winkwimk
