Man taken into police custody in Te Puke

11.20pm: Police have located the man they were seeking in Te Puke this evening.

"The man has been taken into custody," says a police spokesperson.

"Police would like to thank Te Puke residents for the information provided after a public appeal for information was made earlier tonight."

This afternoon police received reports of two sightings of a man in the town carrying what appeared to be a firearm, and asked the public for assistance in locating him.

Earlier, 9pm: Police are responding to reports of a man in Te Puke who is possibly in possession of a firearm. "We have received reports of two sightings of a man in the town carrying what appears to be a firearm this afternoon," says a police spokesperson. As yet, Police have not located the man or anything of concern. "However, we do want to hear from anyone else in Te Puke who has seen a man matching the description given by the people who called police." Police say the man is described as having a skinny build, with brown hair and a long beard.
