Emergency services are responding to a serious vehicle collision in eastern Bay of Plenty on State HIghway 2 in the Waioeka Gorge.

Police were notified of the serious crash on Waioeka Road between Opotiki and Gisborne at 7.18pm.

"Initial indications suggest several people have been injured," says a Police spokesperson.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area.

"Diversions will be in place for some time."
