Police are on the hunt for someone involved in an assault in Waihī after another person was left with serious injuries.

Officers were notified of the assault around 3pm on Tuesday, and were initially unable to locate either person involved.

SunLive readers report that armed police were seen near the Pumphouse.

A police spokesperson says the victim subsequently returned to the scene on Hobson Street and had spoken to staff.

They were transported to hospital in a serious condition.

“Enquiries are ongoing to locate the offender and police are working to determine what has taken place,” says a police spokesperson.

The incident sparked a lockdown by Police at Waihī College towards the end of the school day.

Waihī College Principal Briar Carden-Scott released a statement saying the lockdown was precautionary only.

“Earlier today we were instructed by local police to go into lockdown towards the end of school. This was due to an incident that happened outside of school grounds. We were then given the all clear and instructed to release students. Buses ran as normal.

“This was precautionary only. We are all accounted for and have been released to go home as usual.

“Big thanks to our Police and other services attending, for their quick attention and precautionary measures to keep us safe.”
