Can't understand the thinking that allows this sport to take place off Mauao, from the Mauao management, from the trustee / owners or authorities. They banned rock climbing.
If there is any mishap involving a paraglider there is invariably significant risk and cost to the community below. At the very least, confine activities to a rural area.
Intrigues me the hypocrisy of authorities ,Health and Safety. The Mauao owners and management make their mountain available to paragliders in the knowledge that there are significant associated risks yet there is seemingly no accountability. The owners of White Island (and others) did not receive the same courtesy. Why?

Hmmm

Is that four or five times that paragliders have been injured on council managed Mount Maunganui.
Maybe spending millions on a safe paragliding area will keep them as safe as cyclists.

to each their own

Risk is associated in majority of things we do these days and we as individuals we mitigate these risk by doing certain things, whatever it maybe.

these guys are putting themselves at risk paragliding off of mount maunganui or off anything is a risk. how do you stop a rouge gust of wind coming through? you cannot you simply are taking that risk. we cannot keep asking the council to be our common sense and sometimes things dont need to be fixed just better precautions taken.

what do you people want? i'm sure you wouldn't appreciate being told no you cannot , or no you should not, after attempting to have some thrills of your own.

and that white island incident is bull to blame those people. did you know it was going to erupt? just dumb. wind says chance of volcano today?

You make a very valid point in your comparison with charges on Whakaari. Just perhaps the owners of Mauao should be facing the courts too.
@ Let's get real, I hope you're not suggesting a paragliding strip down the main road :-)) cause the Commorons would probably look into that.
