Initial report: Traffic is backed up after a crash on the Wairoa Bridge on State Highway 2, says an 0800SUNLIVE caller.

"Due to a crash on SH2 Wairoa Bridge, the eastbound lane is blocked. Pass the scene with care and expect delays," says a NZTA spokeperson.

The SunLive caller says the incident is on the Bethlehem end of the bridge and the traffic is tailing back as far as Ainsworth Road in Te Puna.

"There's seven police cars and a fire engine," says the caller.

A police spokesperson says the crash on the Wairoa River Bridge on SH2, Te Puna, involved two vehicles.

They say the incident was reported to police at around 4.05pm.

"No injuries have been reported. It looks like the road is partially blocked but contractors have been contacted."
