Motorists have also been warned of the fog by the New Zealand Transport Agency.

"Please take extra care on the roads this morning with reduced visibility due to fog affecting much of Auckland. Remember to keep your lights on, allow extra time and mind your following distance."

Auckland Transport says delays to all ferry services "due to extreme fog in the harbour" should be expected.

Meanwhile, orange heavy rain warnings remain in place on Tuesday for Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty, west of Kawerau.

A yellow heavy rain watch was in force for Bay of Plenty about and east of Kawerau and Gisborne north of Ruatoria, and Tasman District about and west of Motueka.
