Road reopened following two-truck crash on SH36

Update 12.51 pm: State Highway 36 and Jackson Road are now open following a crash between two trucks at the intersection, which led to one person being in critical condition and another with minor injuries.

"The intersection of State Highway 36 and Jackson Road, Hamurana has reopened following an earlier crash," says a police spokesperson. 

"Police thank motorists for their patience."

Update 10.31 am: One person is reported to be in critical condition following a serious crash in the Bay of Plenty.

Another is reported to have minor injuries after a two-truck crash at the intersection of State Highway 36 and Jackson Road.

"The intersection of State Highway 36 and Jackson Road, Hamurana is blocked following a crash this morning." says a police spokesperson. 

"The crash, involving two lightweight trucks, was reported to Police at 9.30am.

"One driver has sustained critical injuries and one has minor injuries.

"Traffic management is being put in place and motorists are asked to follow the directions of emergency services staff.

"The area is also being impacted by heavy fog and motorists are urged to drive with caution and adjust their speed to the conditions."

NZTA says the road is likely to be closed for some time to allow police to conduct a serious crash investigation.

Diversions are as follows: Northbound traffic: left from SH36 to Central Rd (Ngongotaha), right to Jackson Rd, left to return to SH36 northbound. Southbound traffic in reverse.

Initial report 9.54 am: A section of State Highway 36, between Tauranga and Rotorua, is closed following serious crash.

Emergency services are attending to a two-truck crash scene at the intersection of Jackson Road and State Highway 36, Tauranga Direct Road. 

A police spokesperson says police were notified of the incident at 9.30 am. 

"It appears one of the drivers is injured.

"Contractors have been advised. The road is currently blocked."

NZ Transport Agency reports, "A serious crash has been reported to emergency services on SH36 near Jackson Rd.

NZTA says the road is closed in both directions and people should expect delays.

Diversions are as follows: Northbound traffic: left from SH36 to Central Rd (Ngongotaha), right to Jackson Rd, left to return to SH36 northbound. Southbound traffic in reverse.
