One person is dead following a crash in Tauranga.

Emergency services were called to the crash between a motorbike and car in Maleme Street just after 6am.

"Despite the best efforts of emergency services, the person died at the scene," says a police spokesperson in a statement released this afternoon.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson says they were notified of an incident on Maleme St in Greerton at 5.59am.

"We responded with one ambulance, one rapid response vehicle and one operations manager."

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson says one truck was sent to the scene to help police.

Maleme Street was closed to allow the serious crash unit time to investigate the scene.

Police say the road has since reopened.

"Enquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstances of the crash."
