A Tauranga highway is open this morning following a fatal crash overnight.

Emergency services were called to the two-vehicle crash on Takitimu Drive, near SH29, around 7.30pm on Wednesday.

A police spokesperson says one person died at thes scene and a second person was critically injured.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson says they were notified at 7.27pm, and responded with three ambulances and one rapid response vehicle.

"One patient was taken to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition."

Fire brigades from Tauranga and Greerton responded to the scene.

The road was closed for several hours to allow the serious crash unit time to examine the scene.

According to a Tauranga Transport Operations Centre spokesperson, the road the Takitimu Dr toll road was currently closed between Tauriko SH29 and 15^th Ave exit.

An NZTA Waka Kotahi highway alert today, says the road re-opened around 3am.

Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
