NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is advising motorists that a shoulder closure and 30 km/h speed limit will be put in place between 9am and 4pm on Tuesday, August 13, to repair vandalism to a section of SH2 between Katikati and Omokoroa.
"Responding to any kind of vandalism is a waste of limited road maintenance funds that can be better deployed to keep the roads safe and well maintained," says an NZTA spokesperson.
"Damage to the roads can put everyone using the road at risk."
The situation has been reported to NZ Police for investigation.
A NZTA spokesperson says the vandalism included the removal of hit sticks and spray painting on the road which was an ongoing problem.
NZTA is currently reviewing the plans for this safety improvements project, including the placement of median barriers.
"The NZTA Board will consider the findings of this review and the community will be updated on the outcomes of its decision in due course," says an NZTA spokesperson.
Plan ahead for a safe, enjoyable journey.

Without doubt, this is brainless activity and whomever is responsible for vandalism of any road surface should have to explain their actions before the courts.
Endangering the safety of the general public deliberately is unacceptable and shows very little intelligence.

Spare a thought for all the poor Aucklanders living adjacent to the motorways who can only enter and exit motorways from infrequent on and off-ramps. Our new road design is for the greater good.

The works on this road are akin to putting a bandaid on an arterial haemorrhage.
