Three-vehicle crash in Te Puke

Update, 8.15pm: One person is reported to be in a serious condition following a three-vehicle crash in Pongakawa.

Police say the seriously injured person has been airlifted to hospital.

State Highway 2 between Pongakawa School Rd and Pongakawa Station Rd is now clear and has reopened.

Update, 7.15pm: Due to a crash, State Highway 2 is closed between Pongakawa School Rd and Pongakawa Station Rd.

Emergency services are responding to the scene of the three-vehicle crash in Pongakawa.

A SunLive reader at the scene who phoned 0800SUNLIVE says a rescue helicopter has now landed.

"It's a serious crash with three cars involved," says the SunLive caller. "And there are young families involved. People everywhere.

"The Te Puke fire brigade is here and a fireman told me the road will be closed for some time.

"There is a detour in place."

The Pukehina Volunteer Fire Brigade are also at the scene and have posted an update to their Facebook page.

"We are currently on scene at a serious crash between Pongakawa School Road and Pongakawa Station Road," says the Pukehina Volunteer Fire Brigade spokesperson.

"The road will be closed for some time."

"A detour set out by emergency services is in place," says an NZTA Waka Kotahi spokesperson.

"Follow directions of emergency services or delay your journey. State Highway 2 is closed between Pongakawa School Rd and Pongakawa Station Rd until further notice.

Earlier, 6.19pm: Police are responding to a reported three-vehicle crash on Te Puke East Road, near Pongakawa School Road, says a police spokesperson. 

Police received reports about the crash at 6pm.

The spokesperson says the road appears to be closed.

"It appears one person has been injured, possibly seriously."
