Pedestrian struck by car has critical injuries

Update, 8am:  A pedestrian has suffered critical injuries after being struck by a car on White Pine Bush Road in eastern Bay of Plenty overnight.

"Police were notified of the collision at around 12.05am," says a police spokesperson.

"The injured person was transported to Whakatāne Hospital."

Police say the Serious Crash Unit attended and enquiries into the circumstances of the collision are under way.

"State Highway 2 is now fully open south of Whakatāne," says an NZTA Waka Kotahi spokesperson.

Earlier, 7.15am: Emergency services are at the scene of a serious crash in Eastern Bay of Plenty.

It is unknown at this stage if anyone has been injured in the crash which occurred at around midnight on State Highway 2 about 3km north of Taneatua.

"Due to a serious crash, State Highway 2 is closed between SH30 and Taneatua Rd," says an NZTA Waka Kotahi spokesperson.

"A detour is in place. Please follow the detour and allow for extra travel time.

The alternative route for eastbound traffic: Continue on SH30 to Whakatane, left onto Landing road then straight onto Domain Rd. Right onto McAlister St, straight through the roundabout onto Commerce St, straight through the roundabout onto Valley Rd, straight onto Taneatua Rd before rejoining SH2.

Westbound traffic: As per above in reverse.

State Highway 2 will remain closed until further notice.
