A heavy rain warning across parts of the Bay of Plenty and Gisborne/Tairawhiti regions continues into Sunday through to Monday morning, following overnight storm debris in eastern Bay of Plenty.

SunLive readers report that trees came down near Taneatua Reserve and across State Highway 33 overnight.

MetService says showers, some heavy, with squally thunderstorms are possible this afternoon. Strong northwesterlies are also expected.

A Heavy Rain Warning was put in place on Saturday night through to 9am Sunday, August 18. This warning is for the ranges of eastern Bay of Plenty east of SH2, also far northwest ranges of Tairawhiti/Gisborne.

A period of heavy rain and possible thunderstorms was forecast for this period with 90 to 130 mm of rain expected and with peak intensities of 15 to 20 mm/h.

Additional brief periods of heavy rain are possible from Sunday afternoon through to Monday morning.

"Streams and rivers may rise rapidly. Surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions are possible," says a MetService spokesperson.
