Wet weather wrecks havoc for Waihi Saturday golf

For the second week running, wet weather has interfered with Saturday golf at the Waihi Golf Club.

Depite this, confidence is running high that the days will be fine for the week ahead and for the annual popular Waihi Pairs Triple Challenge in October.

Waihi Golf Club member reports back on the week ending Saturday, August 31:

MONDAY VETS:

On a perfect day for golf, the Vets section played the second round of three of the par competition.

The best round of the day was by Doud Ferguson who finished on +5, clear of Ross Fitness, Ken Purcell, and Eddie Ruha who all had +2. On +1 were Viv Lilley, Peter Wright, and wily Bill Tiffin, with Brian Baynes, Sharon Deacon, Al McMillan, and Norm Kelly all on zero.

After two rounds the men’s current leader is Eddie Ruha, and the leading lady is Edna Connolly.

WEDNESDAY LADIES:

A smaller than usual field contested the nett haggle on Wednesday.

Winner on the day was Wendy Matutinovich with a nett 70, ahead of Desley Rosevear on 73. Sarah Tomsett had 74, while Jill Morrison, and Helen Baynes both had 75.

Sarah Tomsett and Wendy Matutinovich both scored twos on the eight hole, and it was these two ladies day as they also shared the Hidden Holes (nett) with 10 points.

THURSDAY MEN:

The morning field found the going pretty tough with only one player bettering his handicap.

The field was strengthened by the inclusion of six visitors from Formosa Golf Resort.

In Division One it was topped by Craig Munro (Formosa), and Allen Smith who both had 35 points.

Brett Dormer (Formosa) had 34 points, ahead of the questionable threesome of Ted Murray, Rob Morrison, and Pete Rowe, who all had 33 points.

In Division Two it was Bill Tiffin who had the round of the morning with 39 points which unbelievably was seven shots ahead of Doug Ferguson, tom Rowbotham, and John Ramum (Formosa) back on 32 points. Michael Bonnici was next with 31.

In the Afternoon Field, it was Gary Morrison who took the top honours on a countback over Andy Roche (who finally had a good day!) with both having 39 points.

Next was David P. Campbell with 37, while Dave Morris, Wayne Green, and Kelly Exelby all had 36. Alister Cochrane, Craig Sandlant, Rhys Peden, and finally Alan Kurtovich all finished with 35 points.

SATURDAY (NON) GOLF:

The weather gods for the second week running interfered with Saturday golf.

Eight ladies and eleven men commenced play in the morning rain, but more heavy rain made it so bad that all the players retired from the course.

Although the weather appeared to be clearing somewhat, on four players entered for the afternoon haggle making any competition meaningless.
