Man charged with murder following child's death

UPDATE: A homicide investigation is underway following the death of an eight-year-old boy.

Police were called to an address on Anthony Cr in Bader, Hamilton about 5.20pm on Sunday to reports of a "violent altercation".

In a statement released this morning, a police spokesperson says three people were taken to hospital – the boy, with critical injuries, and two other adults who were moderately and seriously injured.

"Sadly, the boy died from his injuries yesterday evening.

"A 37-year-old man taken into custody by police at the scene has been charged with murder and assault, and is due to appear in court today.

"Police are not seeking anyone else in relation to what happened, however will remain in the area as they continue a scene examination and further enquiries."

A person is in police custody following an altercation which left a child with critical injuries.

The Herald understands the incident involved weapons and police say two adults are also in hospital with injuries.

Police and St John ambulance were called to reports of a “violent altercation” at an address on Anthony Cr in Bader, Hamilton, about 5.20pm on Sunday.

Two adults at the property were also hurt. They were taken to Waikato Hospital, where they remain with moderate and serious injuries.

Police have arrested a person of interest and say they are not looking for anybody else. This person was not hospitalised, a spokesperson says.

Officers were due to remain at the property overnight and a scene examination continues.

Police declined to provide any further details, including whether the detained person faces any charges or if they will appear in court.

The Herald understands there is a major police investigation underway at the Anthony Cr property while the child fights for their life.

A police spokesperson they will provide an update today.
