Police are investigating a serious two-vehicle crash near Ōpōtiki overnight. 

Emergency services were called to State Highway 2, between Waiotahe Valley Road and Toone Road about 8.15pm. 

Two people received critical injuries and were airlifted to hospital while a third was taken by ambulance in a moderate condition. 

The Serious Crash Unit attended and enquiries are ongoing to determine the cause of the crash. 

State Highway 2 was closed for several hours, but has since reopened.
