The recently completed road hump in Levers Rd at Matua is being demolished. I am informed this is a result of some residents complaining of “vibrations”. The amount of disruption to residents has been considerable.

This aside, humps are not the answer for road safety and in fact can be quite the contrary. What needs to happen is a simple single fix long-term solution that works on the user-pay principle. This involves the creation of a zone on either side of the school with flashing lights at either end with a 40km/hr speed limit. It would only operate during school days from 8am to 4pm.  

The key is to have this enforced by a speed camera; thus the exercise is self-funding probably in a short time and I would guarantee could also fund other such key areas, creating a safer Tauranga. Most importantly however, children are safer, motorists are more aware, and residents do not have to endure unsightly humps. (Even vibrating ones).

I demand to know how many residents complained, who made the decision to demolish and what is the ratepayers cost?

Personally, I’ve had enough of this type of idiocy when it comes to infrastructure investment in Tauranga without proper diligence and a big dose of common sense.
