Want something different, Kiwiana – and free – to do this long weekend? What about hunting kiwi in Tauranga’s CBD?
The Kiwi Art Trail of 20 large kiwi sculptures each uniquely designed by New Zealand artists – including Tauranga creatives Sam Allen and Te Arepa Teki – is now set up in the city’s CBD.
Tauranga City Council’s general manager: city development and partnerships Gareth Wallis said it’s exciting to have the Kiwi Art Trail launch its North Island tour in Tauranga and create more reasons for people to check out all the progress being made in the city centre.
“Being the first city in New Zealand to host this year’s Kiwi Art Trail is an awesome opportunity for our city centre, made even more special by featuring designs from two local artists.
“The kiwi will help lead a trail around the city centre showcasing the transformation progress. It’s a chance to bring the whole family together, admire the artwork and get those steps in before enjoying a bite to eat at one of the many city centre eateries.”

Developed by Save the Kiwi and Gallagher Insurance, with support from TCC, the free Kiwi Art Trail is in Tauranga CBD until November 17, before it continues to its next destination. And when the trail finishes the sculptures will be auctioned off proceeds given to kiwi conservation. Proceeds from the two Tauranga kiwi will go towards local initiatives.

Hmmm

And how much has this and the photography along the Strand cost us..?
I don't feel any need to support the arts community with public funding. If it's not the council, it's the government or community grants organisations.
Professional begging and unemployment benefit in another form to support political issues and protest in many cases.
Progress??

"Progress being made in the city centre"? It's the shops you need to bring back (not art, although really lovely) after the cbd has been ruined by the previous lot. I'd be interested in seeing how many people this actually brought into the cbd as there certainly aren't any retail shops left to attract folk which is sad. I do hope the cafes and restaurants have benefitted from this artwork.
