Council seeks community input on reserve upgrades

The Western Bay of Plenty District Council is reviewing its Kaimai Ward Reserve Management Plan, which includes 50 reserves, including playgrounds, sports grounds, bush trails, and picnic spots.

It will shape how we care for these spaces for the next nine years. The plan was reviewed in 2016 and is being updated to reflect a growing community, the council’s senior recreation planner, Jason Crummer, said.

“We’ve made great progress since 2016, but we want to continue to deliver what the community needs, so it’s crucial that we plan for the future together,” he said.

“The community knows these spaces best, and we want your ideas to be at the heart of this plan.”

He said it is a chance to help create welcoming, sustainable, and ready-for-generations-to-come spaces.

“It could be a few extra trees for shade, a walking track to connect neighbourhoods or even new playground equipment. Whatever it is, we’re here to listen.”

The revised plan will set the direction for reserves in the Kaimai ward area for the next nine years in Ōmokoroa, Te Puna, Whakamārama, Omanawa, Kaimai, Ohauiti and Oropi.

“We want to make sure our green spaces continue to reflect the needs and values of the people who use them. Your feedback will guide what we focus on,” Crummer said.

Yes, this about right, Council consults on playgrounds and related, obviously that is the level to which they aspire above all else....

Lets not bother to much with: - debt, roads, water and other boring things....

Oooh, let's sell this as picnics, playgrounds for wonderful children, idyllic walks through lush forests and places to wonder at rather than focusing on the realities.
Grass mowing, rubbish collection and removal, vandalism repairs, graffiti removal, fecal matter removal from playground equipment, ensuring that playground equipment is safe and hasn't been booby-trapped, cleaning the BBQ equipment.. etc.
Idealistic utopian dreams have real costs on a daily basis and we are paying many contracting companies millions every year for a few nice memories that we have from years ago.
It's great to have these memories, but we certainly don't need so many places to have them in, particularly when the beaches are so readily accessible.
We should be reducing the vast number of small, seldom used sites, investing in a few destination sites and reduce the maintenance costs of the ongoing empire building.
