Bay defeats Northland in thriller finish

The two Bay of Plenty primary teams entered the Northern Districts three-day tournament in Hamilton last week - with just a solitary loss.

Played at the Waikato University ground, the three-day finale wound up the ND primary five round competition.

On the final day, BOP Coastland defeated Northland in a thriller to finish the competition with four wins and a solitary defeat. Coastland batted first and was in some trouble before reaching 143/8, with Reuben Fitzgerald coming to his team's rescue with a gritty 24 runs.

Tight line and length bowling and sharp work in the field saw Northland struggle for runs, with Oakley Dench taking charge with the ball to take four wickets for 26 runs. While Northland got within touching distance of the victory, the pressure built by Oakley proved too much and they were dismissed short of their required target.

BOP Lakeland was beaten in round five by Waikato Valley Plains and ended the five rounds of competition with three wins and two losses.

BOP Coastland made up for the disappointment of their first up defeat, when they bounced back to post a ten wicket win on day two. Waikato Valley South batted first and set the Bay side a medium sized target when they reached 152/7.

However, the Coastland side cruised to victory without losing a wicket. Josh Earle was there at the end on 62 not out, with fellow Coastland opening batsmen Sean Dykes posting an undefeated 59 runs.

BOP Lakeland master blaster Hayze Perham continued his attack on the opposition bowlers with a century against Counties Manukau. The young Rotorua batsman blasted his way to 101 runs, which has taken his total in four rounds of the 2012 tournament to 235. The Bay team were in real trouble at 4/40, before Hayze came to the crease. From there, the Lakeland batsmen went on to post 252/8.

The match went late into the afternoon with Counties Manukau making a determined bid for victory. However, a five wicket bag from Lakeland skipper Dilan Nanayakkara meant Countieswere removed 14 runs short of victory.

On day one, BOP Coastland's Hayze continued his outstanding tournament form, top scoring with a solid 57 runs, as his side reached 227/7 against Waikato Valley South. Kuhu Tataurangi (35no) and Juan Nieuwoudt (32no) both made handy contributions. The Bay bowlers then took control to dismiss the Waikato Valley team for 109, which gave the Lakeland side a 118 run victory.

The BOP Coastland side was involved in a batting duel with Counties Manukau. Led by Josh Earle (68) and Mikaere Leef (63no), the Bay representatives posted a good-sized target of 188/3. Counties got ahead of the required run rate and reached their target for the loss of five wickets.
