Mini world cup finals

The Bay of Plenty Cricket Mini World Cup Champion of Champions will be fought out at Boord Park in Rotorua tomorrow.

The Baywide final will bring together the regional winners from Rotorua and Taupo, along with the top two from the 16-team Western Bay competition.

The Mini World Cup was initiated by Bay of Plenty Cricket eight years ago, to introduce Year 5 and 6 school pupils, to the enjoyment of the game. To give the competition a real flavour of international cricket, all school teams represent a cricket-playing nation

This year, the teams who have won through to the Mini World Cup Baywide Championship, will carry through the countries that they played under in the regional competitions.

Representing Taupo in Rotorua will be Hilltop School, who play under the banner of England. Hilltop emerged victorious in the Taupo round of the Baywide Mini World Cup and will carry the hopes of the Great Lake region.

In Rotorua New Zealand (Selwyn School) emerged triumphant when the posted a solid win against West Indies (Ngongotaha Primary).

The team representing the Caribbean batted first and was dismissed for 29, courtesy of tight bowling and smart fielding skills from New Zealand. The New Zealand batting attack came out with all guns blazing and reached their target in just seven overs.

The Western Bay final stanza was taken out by Kenya aka Pillans Point School, who defeated Pakistan (Bethlehem College) to hold aloft the Western Bay Mini World Cup trophy. Batting first Kenya posted a large target when they reached 58/3. The Kenya team bowlers then won the battle between batsmen and bowlers to dismiss Pakistan for 37.

Both Pillans Point and Bethlehem College will represent the Western Bay of Plenty, as they attempt to keep the prestigious primary school cricket trophy, in the Western Bay.

In other Primary school cricket news, Tauranga Intermediate will start their defence of the New Zealand Cup in Palmerston North today.

The Western Bay School will meet the regional winners from three other regions in the country to find the 2012 New Zealand Cup champions.
