One person is in critical condition following a house fire in Whakatāne.
At the time of the fire on Monday, Fire and Emergency Northern Communications Centre shift manager Joshua Pennefather said a call was received about the fire in Arawa Rd at 4.02pm.
“The property was well-involved when we arrived,” Pennefather said. “The single-storey house was 120sqm.
“We sent five trucks and a couple of support vehicles.”
Two fire trucks and crews attended from Whakatāne, as well as one each from Ōhope, Edgecumbe and Kawerau.
“We rescued one person from the house. They are being treated by ambulance,” Pennefather said.
In a statement to SunLive this morning, a police spokesperson confirmed they were called to the fire and are investigating,
“An occupant was pulled from the house and transported to hospital in critical condition, where they remain today.
“Police and Fire and Emergency New Zealand are working to establish the circumstances of the fire.”

I heard recently that Whakatane, a town with a ballooning population is still reliant on Voluntary firemen.
People who leave home, work and family to go and do a job our insurance levies pay for.
Surely it must be time to start paying the firemen in Whakatane !
Just maybe rogue.....

...the population of Whakatane (near 17k?) is nearly big enough to have a couple of permanents, but like all volunteer FENZ personnel they are absolutely gold....and if I recall after my time in the volunteer service many years ago, the station was given an annual allowance, the amount I guess depending on staff levels, which was decided to put towards more 'social' events rather than a small remuneration to individual members...
Good times, great training and magic comradery....
