An investigation is under way after a plane crash in Tauranga.

Emergency services were called to Tauranga Airport at 7.50pm on Wednesday.

A police spokesperson confirmed a light plane had crashed.

Mount Maunganui, Tauranga and Greerton station fire trucks attended the scene as well as airport firefighters.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern shift manager Paul Radden said a person trapped in the aircraft was removed using rescue equipment.

Hato Hone St John said one person was transported to Tauranga Hospital in a moderate condition.

The Civil Aviation Authority will investigate.

“We only have preliminary information as provided by emergency services at this stage but will make inquiries in the coming days to understand what happened and whether any further action is needed,” a CAA spokesperson said.

Tauranga City Council, which owns the airport, directed SunLive inquiries to emergency services.
