Acorn Foundation has reached a major milestone, distributing more than $20 million to the Western Bay of Plenty community since its establishment in 2003.
This achievement is the result of generosity from more than 700 local donors, who have helped build a lasting legacy in the region. Chief Executive Officer Lori Luke said small acts of giving can make a big difference.
“Our donors’ contributions have ranged from $10 to substantial estates, and we value each and every donation,” Luke said.
“Through our foundation, these donors enable meaningful, collective impact that is transforming our community.”
Acorn Foundation follows a perpetual funding model, investing donations and distributing returns annually to causes that matter most. Luke said this approach ensures support for both current and future needs.
“This multi-generational approach truly has a lasting impact,” Luke said. “Donors can address the needs of today while also supporting the community of tomorrow.”
Donors can establish endowments in their will or choose to see their philanthropy in action by supporting charities, causes, scholarships, or awards during their lifetime.
The foundation’s first endowment came from the late Edna Brown in 2003, creating the first personal endowment fund in the Community Foundations of Aotearoa New Zealand network.
Luke said this fund has since distributed more than its original gift amount while growing its capital base by nearly 50 per cent.
“Edna’s fund supports medical treatment or conditions that affect locals in our region,” Luke said. “Her fund has supported improved well-being in the region, reaching 14 different organisations.”
Over the past 21 years, Acorn Foundation has distributed more than $20 million, including $3.2 million in 2024 alone.
These funds have supported hundreds of charitable organisations, addressing key issues such as food security, elder care, youth development, environmental preservation, and cultural heritage.
Luke said the foundation’s ability to provide support is made possible by the generosity of its donors.
“Acorn’s ability to support this region is thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our donors,” Luke said. “We welcome anyone who would like to join this growing community of givers who are helping build a stronger Western Bay of Plenty—forever.”
