Imagination takes the lead at exhibition

Let your imagination run wild.

That’s the advice given to Katikati Art Group and Gallery members when the group picked abstract art to be the theme of the annual exhibition.

This year’s exhibition – which has been run since the group’s inception more than 60 years ago – starts this weekend and promises to be a little different with members stepping out of their comfort zones and exploring the endless ideas of abstract art’s free-flowing style.

There will be more than 100 works on display. Submissions include art of all genres, but the majority of artists will be putting forward at least one abstract work.

There will also be an “abstract art challenge” where the public could vote for their favourite.

Abstract art is defined as art which does not attempt to represent visual reality.

Art group secretary Rachel Reynolds said abstract art provides artists with the freedom to “go wild,” as it doesn’t need to adhere to any particular form or structure.

“Abstract art is what comes out of your imagination.”

This year, visitors can expect plenty of colour, striking compositions and thought-provoking works, Reynolds said.

“People will be impressed with the talent within our art group and the diversity of styles.”
