Four injured in SH2 crash

State Highway 2 along a section between Paeroa and Waihi has reopened following a serious crash near the Karangahake Gorge. 

One person is reported to be in serious condition, and two others are in moderate condition.

Hato Hone St John was notified of a motor vehicle incident at 12.54pm on SH2, Waikino.

"Four ambulances, one helicopter, one operations manager attended. One patient, in a serious condition, is being airlifted to Waikato Hospital," said a spokesperson in a statement.

"Two patients, in a moderate condition, were transported to Waikato Hospital by road. Two patients were assessed and treated at the scene (no transport required)."

The two-vehicle crash happened near School Road, and was reported just before 1pm, said a police spokesperson in a statement

“Detours are in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area and expect delays.”

In a highway alert this afternoon, NZTA said “K-Gorge is closed, between School Rd, Karangahake and Waitawheta Rd, Waikino”.

“SH2 [was] closed to through-traffic between Paeroa and Waihi.

“Delay your journey or consider using alternative route.”

Alternative route: To the north via Hikuai and Kopu (SH25, 25A, 26) or to the south via Matamata and Tauranga (SH2, 29, 24, 26).
