Bay sports stars nominated

The toast of Bay of Plenty's sporting success has been recognised in this year's Westpac Halberg Awards nominations with 10 nominees.

The maiden title winning success of both the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic and the Chiefs has been recognised, along with London Olympians Lisa Carrington, Mahe Drysdale, Blair Tuke and Sam Bewley.


The Waikato Bay of Plenty Chiefs are nominated for Team of the Year in the Westpac Halberg Awards.

At total of 63 nominees have been named with the awards receiving 12 nominations for sportsman, eight for sportswoman, six for disabled sportsperson, 17 for team, nine for emerging talent and 11 for coach of the year.

Westpac Halberg Awards spokesperson and Halberg Disability Sport Foundation CEO, Geoff Burgess, says once again the 30 strong voting academy is in for some tough decision making.

"There have been so many captivating sporting performances in 2012 that I am sure will fuel public speculation leading up to the Awards.

"In 2012 we also saw new sporting stars emerge, not to mention the outstanding victories of the Chiefs, the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic and the New Zealand Breakers to mention a few, the competition is huge this year.”

The voting academy will now determine the finalists who are announced on Tuesday, January 1.

The awards will be held in Auckland on Thursday, February 14.
