Teams chase ND trophy

Two Bay of Plenty teams, who will head to Gisborne to play in the ND Senior Secondary cricket tournament to be held December 17-21, are a good mix of emerging talent and senior cricket experience.

The Bay of Plenty Lakeland and Coastland Senior Secondary representative teams are the third step on the Bay of Plenty Cricket pathway, following on from the Bay Primary and Junior Secondary representative programmes.

Graduates in the last decade from the Bay of Plenty Senior Secondary pathway, include current Black Caps Daniel Flynn, Kane Williamson, and Trent Boult, with several other players going on to play professional cricket.

One batsman, that the opposition bowlers will need to keep a wary eye on in Gisborne, is Trident High School student Pip Thickpenny.

The dashing Lakeland batsmen earned selection in the Bay of Plenty Development team last season.

This season he has topped the Secondary School First XI batting totals with 275 runs and has also found time to get amongst the runs in the Baywide Cup senior men's competition.

Coastland wicketkeeper Alex Oakley is another to experience high-pressure cricket, having been selected for the Bay of Plenty Fergus Hickey team last season.

The Tauranga Boys College keeper is amongst the most energetic keepers in Baywide cricket and is picked by some Bay of Plenty cricket followers to have a big future in the game.

Both coaches have spread their talent identification nets far and wide.

While the majority of the Coastland team have been come from Tauranga Boys College, coach Peter Swan has selected Julian Bradley and Tim Klyen from Otumoetai College and also picked Brody Gilroy from Katikati College and Mount Maunganui player Jonty Rhodes.

Lakeland mentor Tony Wolsey has selected players from all three Lakeland regions in his side.

Seven Rotorua players, will be joined by Eastern Bays Tom Casey, Rhys Keighley, and Pip Thickpenny, with Taupo's Michael Hargreaves and Shannon McSkimming also making the team.
